Installing hardwood flooring yourself is not that difficult. In fact, most hardwood flooring are designed and manufactured to be easy to install by do-it-yourselfers, even for someone who may have no experience in putting down a hardwood floor.

If you are looking to install a new hardwood floor for your home and you are thinking of doing the job yourself, instead of paying someone to do it, here are a few tips to help you make the job go smoother and make sure you get the best possible result.

When you get the hardwood flooring home, keep them in their boxes and store the boxes in the room where they will be installed. Don’t start putting down the flooring as soon as you get them home. Keep them in the room, or rooms, for at least 3 days to give them time to adjust to the room’s temperature and humility.

While waiting for the wood flooring to acclimate to its new home read the manual that comes with the flooring and make sure you have all the tools you need to do the job. You want to make sure that you have everything at hand before you start on the job, so you don’t have to stop working and waste time to get what you need at the hardware store.

The typical tools you will need to install your hardwood flooring will be a pry bar, a hammer, a tape measure, a chalk line, miter saw and table saw. Depending on the specific type of installation you are doing, you may also need vapor barrier sheets, nails, a staple gun, glue, a drill, and drill bits. Some hardware stores carry prepackaged hardwood floor installation kits to make gathering the tools less of a hassle.

If you are installing solid wood flooring, it is best to install them on top of a flat and smooth plywood sub-floor. The flooring will last longer. If your installation requires a vapor barrier, the barrier goes on top of the sub-floor before the flooring. Over lap the vapor barrier sheets and taped the overlaps with duct tape.

Hardwood flooring can be installed either horizontally or vertically across the room. The general rule of thumb is to run the planks front to back as you enter a room. The easiest way to decide is to pick the longest wall or the most visible wall in the room as the starting point and lay the planks outward from that wall.

Be sure to leave ½ “gap around the floor to allow for expansion. Try fitting the planks between walls to make sure you don’t have little slivers of flooring planks at one end that will be too small to work with. You may need to cut starting planks to get a good fit.

When you are satisfied with the starting point, draw a chalk line that will serve as a baseline for the first row of flooring. Use the guide for designing the rest of the floor. If you do the starter row correctly, you can be sure that the rest of the planks will be straight.

Stagger the edges of the planks at least 6 inches apart in a random manner. This will make a more pleasing looking finished hardwood floor. Make sure that each rows of planks fit tightly together and that there are no gaps before moving on to the next row.

If you are installing pre-finished hardwood flooring, the last step is to install the baseboard moldings around the base of the walls. Pre-drill holes in the baseboard and secure it to the wall with finishing nails. Do not nail the molding to the flooring to allow the wood flooring to move under the baseboard when it expands and contracts.
If you are installing un-finished hardwood flooring, you will need to buy or rent a sander and finishing tools, or hire a professional, to strain and put a protective finish on the floor to finish the installation.

A wood floor installation is not as difficult a project to do. However, if you ever feel unsure of yourself about installing hardwood floors on your own, there are many competent flooring installers that can turn.

While bamboo flooring is a relative newcomer to the North American market, it is rapidly becoming a popular choice of home owners, interior designers, architects, and builders, as an alternative to traditional hardwood flooring. Bamboo flooring is as durable as hardwood flooring, looks great, is extremely environment friendly and easy to install. Bamboo flooring can now be found in commercial buildings, hotels, restaurants, offices and many high traffic areas.

However with the many variety of traditional flooring materials to choose from including hardwood, cork and ceramic tiles, do you really want to go through the time and expense of using a flooring material that has no track record? To help you decide if bamboo flooring is the right choice for your home, consider the brief recap of bamboo flooring pros and cons:

The Good: Pros of Bamboo Flooring

A key reason why bamboo flooring appear to most people is because of it unique appearance. Bamboo flooring offers as much if not more different grain patterns than hardwood flooring. Flooring made from bamboo also gives any room in the house a warm and homely feel.

As a plant, bamboo may not look too impressive or durable as oak or pine trees. But once made into flooring, bamboo flooring is as strong and durable as hardwood flooring. With proper maintenance, it can easily last for many years, without developing any major problem.

Bamboo is a versatile material. It can be and are made into many varieties to choose from. Bamboo flooring comes in a wide range of designs, including thick panels, thin panels, dark coloring, light coloring, natural bamboo flooring, vertical bamboo flooring, horizontal bamboo flooring, carbonized bamboo flooring, hand scraped bamboo flooring, strand bamboo flooring. You are sure to find a variety that matches your decor and lifestyle.

Bamboo floor installation can easily be done with any of the usual hardwood flooring installation methods. These include a floating floor where the floor is simply glued together to form a single piece, straight gluing to the old floor material and a basic nailing method.

Another good quality of bamboo flooring is that it is relatively unaffected by moisture, which means that bamboo flooring can be used in kitchens and dining rooms, or any areas with limited moisture exposure.

Another noteworthy consideration more and more people are using when looking into using bamboo flooring is the fact that it is extremely environment friendly. Unlike hardwood flooring, which mostly uses wood from fell trees that take decades to mature, bamboo flooring uses the stalks of bamboo plants that only take 5 to 7 years to mature. And once harvested the bamboo plants re-grow without the need to disturb the earth too much.

The Bad: Cons of Bamboo Flooring

Just like hardwood flooring, bamboo flooring is prone to scratches from heavy furniture and sharp objects and discoloration from direct exposure to sunlight.

While bamboo flooring is water and moisture resistant, it will swell and weaken from being soaked or exposed to long term dampness.

Bamboo flooring prices tends to be more expensive than hardwood flooring. However, with the increase in demand for bamboo flooring and more efficient production methods, the cost of quality bamboo floor material can be found for less than half the cost of planked hardwood.

Repairing and refinishing your hardwood floor can be expensive and a lot of work, but with a few simple prevention and maintenance routines, your hardwood floor can look and function as good as the day your first installed it even after many years of service.

Some better quality hardwood flooring, for instance, have withstood years of use and are still in use today. If you ever get a change to look at century old homes that still stand nowadays, you will see how their hardwood floors have stayed intact and stable through all these years.

Therefore, if you want to be able to enjoy the full visual beauty and functional benefits of your hardwood floors for many years to come, you should know how to properly take care of them so they don’t wear out in just a few years from regular use. Because hardwood floors are organic and can decay over time due to expose to air and moisture, cleaning them regularly is necessary.

Because hardwood floors are organic or natural, there is a technique required to properly cleaning of hardwood floors. For one, you should never use a damp rag to wipe hardwood floors because the moisture may cause damage to your finishing. If your have waxed and coated your floors with finish, you have no reason to worry about the water seeping into the woodwork. But if it has been a while since you’ve refinished your floor, then you should be careful to use only soft dry rags to polish the floor.

When sweeping, use only brooms with exploding bristles because they are the most effective in picking up dust, sand and grit. The wrong broom might only be pushing the dirt around the floor, only to have the dirt accumulate in the wrong places and do further damage to the floor in the long run. There are cleaning fluids on the market that are formulated to be safe for use on hardwood floors. It’s best to stay with these products and not experiment with other cleaning materials that are not specifically made for floors.

If your hardwood floor has lots of burns and scratches in spots, you may be able to rejuvenate that section of floor by sanding the area lightly and then reapplying a coat of finish to make it look as good as the rest of the floor. If sticky chewing gum manage to find its way onto your hardwood floor, then you best bet is to apply ice the gum until it becomes hard and brittle enough to just crumble off. For gum that’s been on the floor for awhile, try pouring commercial floor cleaner around the gum to loosen it up.

Solid hardwood floors are easy to keep clean. Treat them well with regular care and preventative maintenance and your hardwood floors will add beauty and elegance to your home stay safe, beautiful, and durable for many years to come.

The beauty, stylishness and sturdiness of ceramic tile have made it a most wanted flooring material of choice for centuries. While these qualities are reason enough for its popularity, tile is also amazingly easy to maintain. Simple household cleaning products is all you need to keep your ceramic tile floors looking new for years.

As with any flooring, the best way to take care tile is by regular periodic cleaning and maintenance. The minimum you need to do is sweep or vacuum your ceramic tile floors at least once a week, more often if it gets regular high foot traffic. Dust and lint can progress into grime if they are not promptly removed, especially in areas where there is high level of moisture.

Since ceramic tile is often used in moist or high humility areas of the home, it is likely that it will be subject to different spills and strains. If removed promptly, any strains of spills on your ceramic floors can easily be cleaned with washing or mopping with hot water and a mild household detergent. Using hot water helps loosen any stubborn dirt that collects in the spill and the detergent lifts any oily substance that may be on the floor. If a simple wipe is not enough to clean up the entire spill, try a second pass over the floor with a damp sponge or mop. If the spill remains obstinate, you may try a soft brush or synthetic scouring pad to loosen the spot, but do not use steel wool or a metal brush, as metal will scratch the glazed surface of the tiles.

After washing a ceramic tile floor, be sure to thoroughly rinse the floor with clean water. This will remove any detergent residue from setting and attracting more dirt to your floor.

Occasionally, a tough stain will appear on a ceramic tile floor, especially floors with unglazed tiles, but these stains can also be easily removed with every day cleaning products. Prepare a paste of scouring powder and water, and firmly rub it onto the stain with a cloth. Allow the paste to sit for at least 5 minutes, and then scrub it away with a soft brush or synthetic scouring pad. Repeat the process until the stain is completely gone, and then thoroughly wash and rinse the floor with clean plain water.

Even in the cleanest homes, mildew frequently makes an appearance, especially in bathrooms, spa areas and pool decks which moisture level is high. Should mildew appear on your ceramic tile, use a simple solution of equal parts water and ammonia to remove it. Again, use a soft brush to clean away the mildew so you do not damage the tile or grout. Rinse the area thoroughly with clean plain water once the mildew is successfully removed. Be sure the area you are working in is well ventilated when using the ammonia solution.

If the grout itself becomes stained or discolored, it can be brightened by a good cleaning with diluted bleach (3 parts bleach to 1 part water). Use the edge of a sponge or a toothbrush for this job, and be careful to keep the bleach solution away from other surfaces. Grout needs to be cleaned and re-sealed once a year to keep stains invisible.

Even rust stains can be easily removed from ceramic tile. Commercial cleaners for rust stains that you can find in your local home supply store will handle most jobs, or you can use regular kerosene to take out the unsightly rust. Be sure to wear rubber gloves if you do use kerosene as it can burn your skin, and make sure the work area is well ventilated.

Unless the glaze on a ceramic tile is damaged, it is rear that stains on ceramic tiles cannot be removed easily. Ceramic tile’s durability and imperviousness to stains is one of its great appeals, and with regular cleaning, most of the stains that may end up on your floor should be easily eliminated. However, if you have been less than diligent in cleaning your ceramic tile regularly and your tiles or grout requires a bit more work to clean, the methods cited above should do the job of returning your tile floor to its original beauty.

There is nothing that compares to the magnificent look of a well maintained natural hardwood floor. If you have taken the effort and spent the money to install a new floor or refinish an old floor, you probably want to protect your investment and take steps to keep your hardwood floors from damage and looking elegance and beautiful for many years to come.

There are many simple precautions that you can take to help retain the luster of your floors. Regular cleaning including sweeping and vacuuming your floors of debris is one of the easiest ways to protect it from scratches. Here are a few more tips to help keep your hardwood floor looking good:

Don’t expose the floor to too much sun. The ultraviolet rays from the sun are one of main causes of discoloration in hardwood, no manner the finish or stain on it. Try to shield your floor from direct exposure to the sun by installing a screen or curtains on your windows.

Some hardwoods turn a lighter color from being exposed to the sun, while other hardwood flooring materials such as oak and cherry will tend to become darker. To slow down the discoloration process, a water-based urethane finish can be applied to your floor. Oil-based finishes are okay but they have a tendency to turn yellow or amber when exposed to sunlight.

You can also try moving your furniture and rugs around the room to even out any discoloration.

Keep the floor dry. Water or other spills can cause serious damage to hardwood floors. Wipe up any spills as soon as possible before the moisture has a chance to work its way under the surface of the hardwood, which may result in warping, cracking or staining. Bear in mind that prefinished hardwood floors may not be completely waterproof. The planks bottom and sides may not be coated and is exposed to the elements and moisture can easily get between the gaps in the boards and warp the wood from underneath.

You can provide a degree of protection by applying a coat of finishing to seal off the gaps and exposed areas; but remember that finishes will have to be reapply as the surface protection wears down. And never use a wet mop to clean your floor. Use only a very slightly damp mop when mopping up dirt and girt from hardwood floors. For truly sticky spots, use a water dampened rag or sponge to clean them by hand and immediately dry them with a paper towel or cotton cloth.

Do not slide furniture across the floor. Never drag heavy furniture over a hardwood floor; either carry the furniture to the spot where you want it, or place felt contacts under the legs to reduce friction with the floor if sliding the furniture across the floor. Felt contacts also cushion the weight of your furniture so they don’t make indentation on your floor.

Hardwood floors are attractive, durable and easy to clean. With just simple common sense care, you can protect your hardwood floor to ensure that it will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment.

Now that you have installed your new cork floors, caring for them is quite simple. While cork flooring is certainly durability and can withstand just about anything you can throw on it, you will want to follow a few simple steps to keep your floors looking new and preserve its usefulness for many years to come.

Cork is one of the easiest floor coverings to care for and maintain. It only takes a little time regularly on some light cleaning of your cork floors surface to keep it looking beautiful. This can be done with a light dust mop, broom or vacuum cleaner.

Try to sweep up debris and dirt brought in on the bottom of shoes that may scratch up the finish and eventually wear away the protective surface.

Never mop the floor with water; however, a slightly damp mop can be used so long as the moisture from it is light enough to evaporate quickly and does not stay on the floor’s surface.

Wipe any spills immediately. Cork flooring will absorb liquid, so it is important to take care of spills as soon as they happen. If the liquid is left on the flooring, it will seep into your floor and may cause deep staining which may be impossible to get out. If you do get the cork flooring stained, there are special cleaners on the market that you should use on your floor that won’t cause additional damage to it.

Take precaution with heavy furniture by putting felt pads under the legs to prevent scuffs and to remember not to drag furniture across the floor as this may result in deep gouges or irreparable damage which may require replacing part of or the entire floor
In areas of the floor that see a lot of foot traffic, you may want to invest in an area rug to cover that section of the flooring to slow down the ware and tear. Still away from rugs that are backed with rubber or foam which could trap moisture and cause fading or discoloration of the cork under that rug.

If your cork floor is regularly exposed to direct sunlight, it will eventually start to fade from the UV rays of the sun. Try to shield the flooring with window treatments, such as curtains, drapes, blinds, or with window tint. You may also want to reposition your rugs and furniture once in a while to give the floor a chance to wear evenly and also allow any natural color changes are even across the entire floor.

However, after years of use, most types of cork flooring will need to be refinished. The time to refinish a cork floor will depend on the foot traffic that the floor is subjected to and the level of maintenance it gets. It is important to refinish the cork flooring before the original coating has worn through to the bare cork. Check with the flooring’s manufacturer for refinishing recommendations. It is best to leave the job of refinishing to a professional.

Cork flooring is eco friendly, attractive, durable, easy on the feet, and fairly reasonable priced. By spending a little time looking after your cork flooring you can be sure that it will continues to look like it was installed yesterday, and will eliminate the need for major maintenance or repairs.

Bamboo is a type of grass. It may be hard to believe that what you normally would think of as a soft and brittle typical lawn grass can be used for a demanding use as flooring material. But bamboo has long been used for a variety of practical ways and in recent years, it has become the material of choice for making both decorative and everyday items that are aesthetically pleasing as well as environmentally friendly flooring.

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world. Depending on the soil and climate conditions, bamboo can grow up to three feet in a single day. There are over 1,000 species of bamboos found in a variety of climates and habitats. But most bamboo products are made from the moso bamboo, which is cultivated in China and most of Asia.

The moso bamboo can grow up to 47 inches in 24 hours and can reach 75 feet high and seven inches across when fully mature.

The average cost of bamboo flooring is between $2 and $4 for every square foot, which is comparable to the price of oak flooring. This is a competitive price considering the many benefits bamboo offers over oak.

Installing bamboo flooring does not require any special and specific technique. In fact, there are several ways you can lay them on: You can float them, nail them down or glue them on to a sub floor. Bamboo is also relatively more renewable than oak since it can be harvested every 3 to 5 years, as opposed to oak which can take up to 10 to 20 years to grow to useful sized trees.

Unlike tree logs, the hollow, tubular stalks of bamboo can’t just be sawed and finished into planks. To make a flat, solid floor, the bamboo tubes are first cut into narrow strips, planed flat, and boiled to remove the starch. The boiled strips are then dry in a kiln and glued and pressed together in flat bundles, and then milled to become strip floor boards. This is the same process that hardwoods like maple or oak undergo to become flooring. Finally, the strips are treated using a preservative to slow down decay.

Bamboo flooring is sturdy and durability, with a hardness that rivals, and in many cases exceeds, the hardness of many traditional hardwood floorings used in the average homes.

However, the hardness of bamboo flooring depends on the species or types of bamboos, the maturity of the plant when it was harvested, and the process used during manufacturing. While bamboo is not wood, and cannot be considered hardwood, it is harder and most stable that hardwood, oak being the standard with which other woods and material are compared.

Some people appreciate the beauty and eco friendly aspect of bamboo. Bamboo is proving to be a hardy and attractive alternative to hardwoods. It’s attractive, available in solid, woven and engineered versions, bamboo flooring come in a variety of colors and grains. Because hardwoods like oak are rather dark and, thus, look too rich and heavy, using bamboo as your flooring makes your space appear lighter, airier, and less contrived.

But perhaps the best thing about bamboo floors is that they are easy to get hold of and install. Bamboo floor strips are sold at all building materials stores. You don’t have to search far and wide to get your hands on them.
